Richard Carroll Lowman, 69, of Irmo, departed this earthly life on February 9, 2024. He was born in Columbia, South Carolina on March 16, 1954 and was the son of the late Roof E. Lowman and Eula Meetze Lowman. Richard worked at the Department of Mental Health for South Carolina State Government many years until retirement. He was a rugged outdoorsman, an avid fisherman, and loved being on the lake. Richard was a lifelong Gamecock fan and also enjoyed watching NASCAR and drag racing. He was a skilled gardener - so much so that he had a summer garden as well as a winter one. He grew produce such as collards, tomatoes, corn, broccoli, and cauliflower to share with friends and neighbors. Those who knew Richard speak of his generosity, sense of humor and love. To know Richard was to love him, and he made you feel just as appreciated. He was a jokester and a prankster who loved to brighten people’s lives in any way he could. Those left to cherish Richard’s memory include his loving wife of 43 years: Carolyn Franklin; his daughter: Leslie Austin (James); his sister: Joyce Britt (Dick); his two grandchildren: Nicholas and Alaina Austin; three nephews: Allen Monts, Donald Monts, Freddie Lowman; one niece: Teresa Royson; great-nephews and great-nieces as well as cousins. Richard also leaves behind his beloved fur children: Phoebe, Bailey and Gabby. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Fred D. Lowman, and one great-niece. A graveside service will be held for Richard on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 1:00 PM in Bush River Memorial Gardens located at 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, South Carolina, 29212.
