WEST COLUMBIA—Winston Walton Pownall was born in Donnellson, Illinois on September 22, 1919, the second child of O. B. Pownall and Nellie Walton Pownall. Win graduated from Greenville High School in 1936 and the University of Illinois in 1950 with a B.S. Degree in Accounting.Win worked for Champaign Production Credit Association from 1950-1953.From 1954-1982 he served the Farm Credit System as field accountant in various auditing positions and as Farm Credit Bank examiner. Win served in the U.S. Army, 33rd Division (131st Infantry) from February 1941 to April 1944, and 79th Division (304th Combat Engineers) from April 1944 to September 1945.He was in the entire campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe.Honors include Bronze Star and European Theater of Operations Ribbon with four Campaign Stars.Before and after the war, Win served as temporary or substitute rural mail carrier in the Donnellson area.He also farmed for neighbors and with his father, and worked for florists in the St. Louis area. Win is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Wise Pownall; four children, James M. (Nell) Pownall of West Columbia; Peggy Pownall Haygood of West Columbia; John M. (Jane) Pownall of Charlotte, NC; Joseph C. (Jennifer) Pownall of Cayce; grandchildren, Paul Haygood, Cory Pownall, Gia Haygood, Jack Pownall, Jill Pownall, Jenna Pownall, Tony (Amanda) Kayton, and Scott(Melissa) Kayton; great-grandchildren, Brianne, Bailie, Ashlynn, and Charlie Kayton; sisters, Patricia Sample, Jane (Anthony) Markarian, Jo (Jack) Elam, and Kay (Ralph) Guy; numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Charline and Valeria; brother, Jimmy and nephew, Jon. Win will be remembered for his optimistic spirit and love of music and nature. Funeral services for Winston W. Pownall, 95, of West Columbia, will be held at the church he attended, Saluda River Baptist Church, 3459 Sunset Blvd., West Columbia, SC 29169 at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 13, 2015, conducted by Dr. Charles Westbrook.Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. in Fort Jackson National Cemetery with military honors.The family will greet friends from 10-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
