IRMO—Funeral services for W.C. Hawkins, 95, of Irmo, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2015 at Union United Methodist Church, 7582 Woodrow Street, Irmo, SC 29063.Reverend Wayne Horne will officiate.Burial will follow in Colony Lutheran Church Cemetery, Hwy 76, Newberry, SC. The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, January 29, 2015 at Temples Halloran Funeral Home, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212. Mr. Hawkins, beloved husband for 60 years to the late Katie “Kitty” Mills Hawkins, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2015.Born in Liberty, SC, he was the son of the late James Henry Hawkins and Caroline Lesley Hawkins.He moved to Central, SC as a youngster and was educated in the Central public schools. Mr. Hawkins was a proud Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, where he served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. A graduate of Clemson College, he holds his M.Ed. from the University of South Carolina.He was a member and past president of numerous professional organizations. He was principal of Lancaster Senior High School, then Superintendent of Chester County Schools. In 1966, he was named Superintendent of Lexington County School District 5, where he served for 15 years until his retirement. In 1977, W.C. Hawkins was named South Carolina Superintendent of the Year.The following year, in recognition of his contribution to the community, W.C. Hawkins Stadium was named in his honor. W.C. and his wife, Kitty, were Charter Members of Coldstream Country Club, where they played golf almost every day.W.C. also played with the Old Guard. Surviving are his children, Jimmy Hawkins (Sherry) of Columbia, Kathy Weeks (Tommy) of Columbia and Mike Hawkins (Candi) of Charleston; his greatest love of all, his 7 grandchildren, Amye Caldwell, Cee Hawkins, Ashley Cook (James), Mills Hawkins (Courtnee), Zann Hawkins (Sarah), Katie Livingston (Bryan) and Tyler Hawkins; 5 great-grandchildren, JD Cromer, Julia Cromer, Mary Hollis Hawkins, Caroline Hawkins and Millee Hawkins; sister, Sue H. Goodman of Laurens.In addition to his wife, W.C. was preceded in death by a son, William C. Hawkins, Jr., daughter, Harriett Hawkins and a sister, Eunice H. Elrod. The family would like to thank the staff of Generations of Irmo for their devotion to Pop over the last 4 years.
