Virginia “Ginger” N. White, 98, of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, April 10,2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 29, 1925, in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Harry M. and Natalie Pate Newsom. Ginger earned two Bachelor’s Degrees from the University of South Carolina, the first in Education and the second in Music. She was a retired elementary school teacher and taught piano lessons in her home for many years. After she retired, Ginger had a full second act. She was an avid golfer, playing the game she loved until she was 97. Through golf, she made many friendships that lasted until the end of her life. In December 2022, just prior to her 97th birthday, Ginger was recognized as the “Most Improved Golfer” at the Country Club of Lexington. During her playing days as a member of Columbia Country Club, she made a hole-in-one on two separate occasions. In addition to her golf, Ginger enjoyed the game of bridge, playing with at least four different groups. She was a shrewd bridge player and made friendships that lasted a lifetime from this hobby. In her spare time, she loved to garden, caring for her vegetables and her roses. Ginger was a big Gamecock fan, attending football games along with Men’s and Women’s basketball games for many years. Traveling was another interest for Ginger. She was fortunate to travel domestically and internationally on many occasions. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Robert E. White, siblings and their spouses: Sarah N. King (Nesbitt “Doc”), Miriam N. Carter (Ed), Johnny Newsom (Carolyn) and brother-in-law Jerry Blackwell. Those left to mourn her loss include her children: David E. White (Earline), Nancy W. Dennis (EJ), and John R. White; her sister: Rosamond N. Blackwell; grandchildren: Rebecca Moody (Blake), Bryan White (Katie) and Natalie D. Macmurphy (Will); and great-grandchildren: Peyton, Harper, Deacon, Deklan, and Cohen; and many nieces and nephews. Ginger was a lover of life. She was excited about every new day. She lived her life to the fullest and slid into home plate. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all those she touched. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Temples-Halloran Funeral Home, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212, with The Rev. Dr. Dennis Bolton officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 am until the hour of service.
