COLUMBIA—A graveside service for Vernon Houston Nelson, 88, of Columbia, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2015 in Elmwood Cemetery, 501 Elmwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29201.The Reverend Melvin Amundson will officiate the funeral service for the Nelson Family. Temples Halloran Funeral Home, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212 is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to Pets Incorporated, 300 Orchard Drive, West Columbia, SC 29170 or a Charity of One’s Choice. Mr. Nelson, beloved husband of 61 years to the late Violet Sauls Nelson passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at Heartland of Columbia.Born in Columbia, SC, he was the son of the late Dr. George Kaigler Nelson and Mable Bates Nelson.He was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church. Vernon was well known throughout the Elm Abode Community as a dependable neighbor who had the talent to fix anything and everything. Surviving are his daughter, Bonnie E. Nelson of Columbia; son, Dr. Larry H. Nelson and his wife, Joyce of Sunset, SC; grandchildren, Traci Nelson Harrington of Central South Carolina, Dr. Kelly Nelson Tracy and her husband, Jon of Cullowhee, NC, and Andrew H. Nelson of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Noah I. Harrington, Madelyn A. Tracy and Ella Grace Tracy, as well as the beloved family Dog, Mollie.
