Vernon H. Backlund

IRMO—Funeral services for Vernon H. Backlund, 87, of Irmo, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 8, 2016 at Temples Halloran Funeral Home Chapel, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212.Reverend Richard Humphries will officiate. The family will greet friends from 10-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Vernon’s honor to First Baptist Church of Columbia, 1306 Hampton Street, Columbia, SC 29201 or Cornerstone Community Church, PO Box 662, Grand Marais, MN 55604. Born in Two Harbors, Minnesota, he was the son of the late Simon Backlund and Elizabeth Skoog Backlund.Mr. Backlund was the son of Swedish Immigrants who settled in Northern Minnesota. He grew up working in the Family Grocery Store in Northern Minnesota that he later owned.Vernon owned and operated a Meat Market in Phoenix and then moved to Irmo, SC in the early 1994. He also worked part-time with Meetze Plumbing. Vernon proudly served his country in the United States Army and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Columbia. Surviving are his sons, Dale Backlund of Peachtree, GA, Gary Backlund of Sumter, SC and Mark Backlund of Irmo, SC; sister, Virginia Eckstrom of Columbia; grandson, Eric; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. Those who preceded him include his late wife, Virginia and a brother, George.
