Susan McPhail Lorick, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away on Saturday, April 29th, 2023. Susan was born in Rowland, North Carolina on February 24, 1952 to Adelaide Willson Bethea and James Walter McPhail. Growing up in Rowland and at Murrells Inlet, in the summers, Susan enjoyed relaxing by the water on a porch and great seafood, especially crab cakes. Susan attended Columbia College and finished her degree while caring for her father. She later received her masters from Francis Marion University in early childhood education. Susan married Carroll Jacob Lorick on August 6, 1977 in her hometown. They made their home throughout the state in Florence, Greenville and Rock Hill before settling in the Irmo area. As a longtime resident of South Carolina and school teacher throughout the state, she spent a majority of her career at A.C. Moore Elementary in downtown Columbia before finishing her over thirty year teaching career at Lake Murray Elementary in Ballentine. Following her retirement, Susan filled her time as a substitute teacher, enjoying the autism program at Oak Pointe Elementary most of all. Susan was an avid reader and eagerly shared her love of literacy with everyone she knew. She was an avid bunco player within her neighborhood. Susan was a proud breast cancer survivor and an active member of the Pink Posse. She leaves behind an extended network blessed to call her their friend. Susan was predeceased by her parents, James and Adelaide. She is survived by her husband, Carroll; daughters, Geneva (Brian) and Eleanor (Brent) along with three grand-children, Ella, Walker and Byron. She is also survived by a first cousin, Willson Powell, and many close friends including, lifelong friend, Lolita Watson. A memorial service will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church at 528 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29210 on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at 11:00 a.m.
