Columbia—A Celebration of Life Service for Samuel “Sam” L. Caskey, Jr., 59, of Columbia, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Temples Halloran Funeral Home Chapel, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212.Reverend Steven L. Brown, Reverend Wayne Smith, Jr. and Reverend John W. Culp will officiate.The family will greet friends and fellowship following the service at the funeral home. Sam, beloved husband of Susan Moore Caskey, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2016.Born in High Point, NC he was the son of the late Samuel Lathan Caskey, Sr. and Marie Ragan Harmon.Sam graduated from Enfield Academy in Whitakers, North Carolina.He attended High Point College and graduated with a B.S. in Biology in 1979.Sam and Susan were married in 1979 and lived in High Point before moving to Charleston, South Carolina where they lived for three years.A job transfer with George T. Wood and Sons moved them to Columbia in 1984.Sam was the owner and operator of SLC Flooring Associates LLC for fifteen years.He was then later called to serve as Funeral Director at Temples Halloran Funeral Home in Columbia where he worked until his recent passing.Sam was a devoted, life long United Methodist where he was an active member of the United Methodist Men, United Methodist Volunteers in Missions Early Response Team (SCERT), Epworth Children’s Home, and was a 23 year veteran of Salkehatchie Summer Service.He also served actively in the Emmaus of the Midlands community and with the Epiphany Ministry of South Carolina. Sam was named United Methodist Man of the Year in 2010 for his diligence in service at Windsor United Methodist Church where he and his family attended for many years.At the time of his death, Sam was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church in Columbia.In addition to serving his neighbors in need both locally and nationally, he was an avid Barbecue connoisseur and Pit Master.Sam was the proud owner of Sammy’s BBQ.He competed regularly and was also a certified Kansas City Barbecue Society Judge.Sam and his dear friend, Sam Bower were awarded the Master Barbecue Award for the South Carolina Barbecue Association for two consecutive years.He not only cooked competitively, but cooked for multiple fundraisers to support Salkehatchie Summer Service, Epworth Children’s Home, and other service organizations.Sam was an advocate for Richland School District Two Schools and was named a 2010 Partner in Education for Richland School District Two for his services at L.W. Conder Elementary Arts Integrated Magnet School.As a youth, he was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America and was awarded the highest honor, that of Eagle Scout in 1973. In addition to his Eagle Scout, Sam also earned the Order of the Arrow.He served as Scoutmaster of Troop 388 at Windsor United Methodist Church.Sam was also awarded with the Wood Badge Award and was named Scoutmaster of the Year by the Indian Waters Council in 1992. He also received the Cross and Flame Award from the United Methodist Church for recognition of his outstanding service.Most recently, he served Troop 900 at Windsor United Methodist Church.Sam was extremely proud of all of his scouts, especially when any of them persevered to earn the highest honor, the Eagle Scout. Surviving in addition to his loving wife of 37 years, Susan Moore Caskey; are two daughters, Emily Paige Caskey and Beth Caskey Robinson (Marshall) of Columbia; sister, Susan Evans (Johnny) of Trinity, North Carolina;nephew, Jon Evans (Julie) and their children Jackson and Jillian all of Durham, North Carolina; brother-in-law, Lindsay Moore (Bonnie) of Whiteville, North Carolina; niece, Natalie Johnson of Trinity, North Caroline;his Golden Retriever of the home, Sadie and his grand-dogs, Bentley, Hampton and Ollie.
