Rubye Lee O'Brien

October 25, 1926 — March 19, 2025

Rubye died peacefully after 98 wonderful years on March 19, 2025. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years, O.B. Rubye was born in Andalusia, Alabama and one of eight children born to Henry and Kate Bass.

Rubye was a spitfire, who loved her family dearly and was always ready to have a party.  She was an honest person who was quick to offer her opinion, never leaving anyone wondering what was on her mind.  Being the wife of a 30 year Marine veteran was one of her most cherished accomplishments, and one she was very proud of.  Rubye often told people that the Marines were good to her family and provided her a great life.  While she was holding down the homefront, after settling in the Irmo area in 1975, she also worked as a bookkeeper and enjoyed her time working at the AMF bowling alley on Bush River Road.  Rubye went on to manage a women’s bowling league out of JC’s Lexington Bowl, the Slimliners, for many years.  The one thing that brought her the most pride was her family and dear friends and spending time hosting them in her home for all of life’s occasions.

Surviving are her daughters, Janie Harrison (Herb - Deceased), Diana Whaley (Jeff). Grandchildren; Donald Harrison, Charles Harrison, Richard Harrison, Evan Harrison (Brittany; Great Grandchild: Gracelynne), Kathryn Swift (Jon; Great Grandchildren: Colin & Avery), John Spigner (Kevin), Connor Whaley (Allison), Ruthie Vail (Addison).  Rubye also had many great-grand and great-great grandchildren, as well as special nieces and nephews whom she loved so much.  She was predeceased by her loving husband, Richard J. O’Brien, her son Billy Barton (Margie), Daughter Debbie Edelmayer, and grandson Chris Harrison. Rubye will be deeply missed by all of her friends and family.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 21, at 12:00 at Temples-Halloran followed by burial at Bush River Memorial Gardens.
