A graveside service for Robert Manuel Whisenant, 88, of Leesville, will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at 9:00 a.m. in Ft. Jackson National Cemetery. Robert was born on October 22, 1932, in Fitzpatrick, WV, to the late Horace W. Whisenant and Dora Kidd Whisenant.He passed away on Saturday, September 18, 2021. Proudly served in theUS Army for 20 years, where he was stationed in Korea, Germany, Panama, and two tours in Vietnam. Some of his awards include The Silver Star for valor in combat, two Bronze Star Medals for heroic achievement in a combat zone, and Combat Infantryman Badge.Robert worked at Westinghouse Nuclear Fuels in quality control for 21 years after retirement from the Army. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing, gardening.He was a full-time West Virginia Mountaineers Football fan. Surviving are his children, daughter, Karen J. Whisenant, and son, Robert Shane Whisenant (Sherry); stepchildren, Deborah Warner (John) and Ralph “Joe” Edmonds (Wanda); brothers, Bryant Whisenant (Hanna) of Oceana, WV, and David Whisenant, (Jean) of Mechanicsburg, VA; sisters, Anna Faye Jarrett, Charleston, WV and Mary Caldararo, Elkin, NC; grandchildren, Chad, Jamie, David, Ashley, and Rachel; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Allyson, Thayden, and Emma.Robert was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty J. Whisenant, and they were married for 57 years; five brothers, Homer Whisenant, Harold Whisenant, Max Whisenant, Charles Whisenant, and Benny Joe Whisenant; and four sisters, Ruth Frances, Jean Meadows, Betty Drenan and Nancy Nichols.
