Riley Laverne Newman

COLUMBIA- Riley Laverne Newman, Jr. 57, of Columbia, passed away suddenly on Friday, April 3, 2015 at his residence. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 11 AM in the chapel of Temples Halloran Funeral Home, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212 with burial following in Memorial Gardens of Columbia, 9301 Wilson Blvd. Columbia, SC 29203. The Reverend William “Bill” Powell will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 AM at the funeral home. Born in Columbia, SC on September 11, 1957, he is the son of Riley “Skebo” Newman and the late Nellie Newman. Laverne served in the Marine Corps and was presently employed with his father at the Five Points Exxon. He was a member of Denny Terrace Baptist Church. Laverne’s passion in life was history; he was a very well read man. His love of reading and history began at a very early age. Laverne loved having great discussions and debates with his friends, Becky and Sylvia. He also loved cooking and most of all he loved his best friend “Baby” his 12 year old dog.
