Richard Wayne Bates

Richard Wayne Bates, 74, of Chapin, SC passed away peacefully in the loving arms of his family on 8 March 2023. His Memorial Service will held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, 25 March 2023, at Stallsville United Methodist Church, 255 Stallsville Loop, Summerville, SC. Mr. Bates was born 12 February 1949, in Charleston, SC. He was predeceased by his parents, Phillip Wardlaw Bates and Mary Ratliff Bates. He was a 1967 graduate of James Island High School and attended the University of South Carolina. He was retired after 36 years from the U.S. Postal Service as Station Manager of the Oakbrook Branch in Summerville. After retiring from the USPS, he worked 5 years for the U.S. State Department Passport Office in Charleston where he was a Project Manager for the contractors. When his children were growing up, he was active with the YMCA and Summerville Soccer Club as a coach. He was a member of the USC Gamecock Club for 40 years, attending most football games, basketball games, and baseball games with his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling and he and his wife took several trips to Europe and spent the last six years taking their vacations to Maine. He is survived by his wife, Carol, two sons – Greg (grandson Wesley) and Jeff (wife Megan, grandson Jamison, granddaughter Millie Kate), and four brothers. Temples-Halloran Funeral Home is assisting the Bates family.
