COLUMBIA—Raymond M. Cavanagh, Jr. was born September 21, 1946, to Raymond M. Cavanagh, Sr. and Anna Harrington Cavanagh in the Bronx, NY.He passed away on January 3, 2017, at the age of 70. Mr. Cavanagh was reared in Augusta, GA, graduated from Augusta College and received his MEd from USC. He taught school at Immaculate Conception in Augusta, GA and was a teacher and coach at St. Angela Academy in Aiken, SC. Ray worked for many years with Vocational Rehabilitation in Aiken and with the then Dept. of Youth Services before moving to Columbia in 1984 to continue his career of 42 years with the State of South Carolinaand the Dept. of Juvenile Justice.He was most recently employed with Saluda Shoals Park. Mr. Cavanagh was of the Catholic faith and belonged to both St. Peter’s Catholic Church and Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church. Since moving to Columbia in 1984, Ray was very active in youth sports as a coach, referee, and proud parent.He led many teams, both soccer and baseball, to championships at Seven Oaks Park. Mr. Cavanagh was always the ultimate teacher, whether in a classroom, on a sports field, or among his many colleagues at DJJ.Ray had a wealth of knowledge about a variety of subjects and was always happy to share that knowledge, especially while watching Jeopardy!Ray was a Gamecock fan through and through, in good times and bad.He loved watching his Gamecocks in any sports, but most especially basketball (men’s and women’s), football, and baseball. Forever to thee! Ray was predeceased by his parents, a grandson, Garrett Callaway and his cousin, Dr. Joseph M. Cavanagh.He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Fay; their son, Warren and his wife, Anna; his daughter of N. Augusta, Kelly Cavanagh Callaway; three beloved grandchildren, Jordan Cavanagh, Avery and Jackson Callaway; cousin, JoAnn Shove; his cousin-in-law, Carla Cavanagh; and his former wife and friend, Judy Whaley. Funeral services for Raymond Michael Cavanagh, Jr., 70, of Columbia, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 6, 2017 at Temples Halloran Funeral Home, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212 with burial to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens.Chaplain Paul St. John will be officiating.The family will greet friends from 1:30 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.prior to the service at the funeral home.
