Maxie Wilcher Booker, 93, of Cayce, SC, entered eternal rest Tuesday, August 6, 2024. Born in Midville, Georgia, Maxie was a force her entire life, admired by everyone who knew her for her generosity and work ethic, and for overcoming humble beginnings to make a comfortable life she was proud of. She entered the workforce early, spending most of her adult years as a seamstress. After the death of her husband, Clifton, in 1982, she enjoyed traveling and making new friends. She took many international solo cruises as well as tours throughout the United States and Canada, delighting in her globetrotting adventures. After her retirement, she started a second career as a caregiver and companion to the elderly, devotedly caring for her charges. She loved working and meeting people. Maxie was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing and preserving produce. She was especially proud of her kale, which she was able to grow year-round, even in the summer heat, and always had in her freezer. She was an incredible Southern home cook and it was difficult to take her to restaurants because she said her own cooking was better – and it was. No one ever left her house hungry or without their arms full of leftovers, and she took care of her family, friends, and strangers alike. Her loved ones are bereft at her loss. Maxie is survived by daughters Karen (John) Brabham of Lexington, SC and Sandy Stafford of Columbia, SC; grandchildren John (Ashley) Brabham III, Michael (Sue Chang) Stafford, both of Charleston, SC, and Andrew Stafford of Columbia, SC; numerous great-grandchildren; and sisters Anita Holland of Augusta, GA, Christine Moore of Midville, GA, and Patsy Haycraft of Wadley, GA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton L. Booker; parents, Almon and Gladys Wilcher; sister Bernice Brigdon of Sylvania, GA; and brothers, M.L. Wilcher and Ray Wilcher, both of Midville, GA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Leeza’s Care Connection, 201 St. Andrews Rd., Columbia, SC 29210. Visitation will be held at Temples-Halloran Funeral Home on Monday, August 12, from 2 – 4 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, August 13, at 11:00 a.m.
