It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Martin David “Marty” Gunsalus, 78, of Columbia, SC, who passed away on Monday, January 27, 2025. Born January 17, 1947, in Troy, NY, he was the son of the late William Burr Gunsalus I and Rose Raywitz Gunsalus.
Marty served our country in the United States Air Force in Vietnam. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Oswego State University in New York. He started his civilian career working in the commercial printing industry. After that he went on to become a teacher of graphic arts and printing for 30 years. He attended Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church in Columbia, SC and was a member of the American Legion.
In addition to his parents, Marty was predeceased by his wife Doris “Dee” Darden Gunsalus whom he was a loving and devoted husband for over 50 years. He was also predeceased by his sister Rosemary Bonacquist.
He will be missed tremendously by his big brother and sister-in-law, William and Winifred Gunsalus, with whom he spoke with every day, and his caretaker, companion and best friend, Janet Walker.
“Uncle Marty” had eleven nieces and nephews and twenty-five grand nieces and nephews. They were always in his thoughts and his accepting and supportive demeanor made him a favorite among them all.
We will gather together on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church in Columbia, SC, to remember and honor Marty who will be greatly missed. There will be an 11 am visitation with a 12 noon funeral mass followed by a luncheon.
