A funeral service for Martha Evitt Hammett, 89, of Columbia, will be held at noon, Saturday, December 11, 2021, at St. Andrews Baptist Church, 230 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29210. Reverend Ronald “Dee” Vaughan will officiate.Burial will follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens.The family will greet friends from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Martha was born in Greenville, SC on May 6, 1932, to the late Troy England Evitt and Irene Callaway Evitt. Martha’s family moved from Greenville, where she was born to Winston-Salem, NC, and later to Charleston, SC where Martha graduated from Memminger High School.She earned her degree in Education from Furman University where she met her beloved husband, Woody.They were happily married for 47 years.Martha taught English in South Carolina Public Schools for many years.She was a devoted member of St. Andrews Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and participated in many activities of the church.Martha was a loyal Gamecocks Fan.She enjoyed attending football and basketball games at USC. She loved to watch professional baseball and tennis.Martha was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Martha’s children and grandchildren remember camping trips, water skiing outings, and ski trips in the North Carolina mountains. She enjoyed playing board games with her family and loved slipping off to read “just one more chapter” of the book she was reading.She loved her Lord and her family.She will be missed by many. Surviving are her daughters, Karen Stinson (Jack), Page Wiley (Jerald), and Jennie Joseph (Michael); sons, Ryan Hammett (Denise) and Mitch Hammett; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
