Marilyn E. Mothershed, 86, of Columbia, South Carolina, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, March 17, 2025. She was born on June 9, 1938, in Bridgeton, New Jersey, to Reverend Carl Egli and Muriel Joy Egli. Marilyn, a beloved child of the King, will be deeply missed and always remembered.
Graduating from Montrose High School in Montrose, Pennsylvania, in 1956, Marilyn attended the Robert Packer School of Nursing and joined the United States Air Force in 1964 as an RN in the Medical Service Corps. While in the Air Force, she met William Elliott Mothershed, her faithful husband of 59 years, whom she married on August 9, 1965. After serving together at the Kincheloe Air Force Base in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Bill and Marilyn moved to Rock Hill, South Carolina. While in Rock Hill, they were blessed with their beautiful baby girl, Elizabeth Anne (Lisa). After relocating to Columbia, South Carolina in 1970, their second daughter, Rebecca Renee, was born.
After her girls started school, Marilyn returned to the profession she loved which brought her continuous joy. She primarily worked in the special-care nursery at Lexington Medical Center for 32 years, where she was lovingly called "Mother." Caring for countless babies and helping new moms shaped her life and fulfilled her with a passion to always care for others. Throughout her life, she would "adopt" families and people in need and bless them with meals and gifts. She also supported countless missionaries serving Jesus around the world. She lived out Hebrews 13:16, "Do not neglect to do good and share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God."
Marilyn and Bill were avid campers spending many weeks and months camping at Myrtle Beach and traveling to see new places. Marilyn was a wonderful cook who made almost everything homemade. She also loved gardening, singing in the choir at First Baptist Church, playing the piano, movies, puzzles, and spending time with her family.
Beginning her journey of faith at a young age, Marilyn asked Jesus into her heart when she was three. Marilyn loved her church, where she fostered sweet friendships and served those in the congregation faithfully. Her lifelong mission of helping people flowed from her deep relationship with Jesus. Marilyn loved the Lord with all of her heart, and it was a rare day that she did not talk about Him. Whether praying for her family, evangelizing to people in the grocery store, or dedicatedly reading her Bible, she sought to make Christ known through her life. She used to say her greatest desire was that when she reached heaven's gates, she would be greeted by a Savior telling her "well done, good and faithful servant."
After her faith in Christ, Marilyn's faithful marriage of 59 years was the grounding factor of her life. Her two daughters and two granddaughters that emerged from her union with Bill were her pride and joy. Amidst each successive chapter of her life, Marilyn remained faithful to her husband, with whom she often celebrated her precious family. "Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails." 1 Corinthians 13:7-8.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Muriel Joy Egli, her brother Roger and sister-in-law Marie, and her infant son. Surviving are her husband, William "Bill" of Columbia, SC; daughters, Lisa Piazzola (Vince) of North Charleston, SC, Rebecca Becker (Jeff) of Lexington, SC; and two beloved grandchildren, Ella Rose Becker and Ava Joy Becker.
Marilyn's Celebration of Life service will beheld at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 22 at First Baptist Church of Columbia (Boyce Chapel). The family will receive friends prior to the service at 1:00 pm. At the conclusion of the service, a graveside service will be held at Bush River Memorial Gardens in Columbia. Marilyn's family invites you to join them in celebrating her beautiful life.
