The funeral service for James Linwood Swittenberg, Sr., 85, of Columbia, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 30, 2021, at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 1416 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210.Burial will follow in the St. Andrews Lutheran Church Cemetery, 407 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29210. The Reverend John P. Trump will officiate.The family will greet friends from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the church. Due to the COVID-19 virus, we require everyone to wear a mask and social distance. James Linwood Swittenberg, Sr. passed away at home on Tuesday, September 28, 2021.He was born on February 6, 1936, in Little Mountain to the late William David and Eva Cannon Swittenberg. He retired from the SC Department of Corrections after working many years for W.O. Blackstone Co.He was an active member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church where he was a former church councilman and served on many committees.He served honorably in the United States Army. He enjoyed camping, gardening, and woodworking.For years he was involved with coaching youth baseball in the St. Andrews Community.He enjoyed Clemson Football. Surviving are his loving wife of almost 60 years, Carolyn Crowell Swittenberg, and children, Jim, Lisa (Darrin) Player and Meredith (Mitch) Greene; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Lindy, Haley, Scottie, Peyton, and Charlie.He is also survived by a sister, Melba (Jimmy) Graham, and many nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.
