Lena Joe S. Carothers

COLUMBIA—The funeral service for Lena Joe S. Carothers, 87, of Columbia, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 30, 2020, at Westminster PresbyterianChurch, 1715 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210. The Reverend Carol Byrd will officiate.The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. in the fellowship hall.Interment will be held at 2:30 p.m. in Grandview Memorial Park, 620 South Cherry Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732. Mrs. Carothers was born on January 31, 1932, and departed this life on Sunday, January 26, 2020, surrounded by her loving family.She was the daughter of the late Alexander C. Sutton and Lena Rivers Whitesell Sutton. Lena Joe was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.She served as a church secretary, an elder, a deacon, and in the Stephen Ministry.Lena Joe retired after 13 years as the bookkeeper for Jaderloon Company, a local greenhouse manufacturer. Mrs. Carothers was married to James (Stoney) Frank Carothers, Jr., on February 2, 1952.They enjoyed square dancing, traveling, and playing cards. Lena Joe is survived by a son-in-law, Kenneth Navy, Sr.; a granddaughter, Kristy Lynn Navy; a great-granddaughter, Michelle Kougher; and a great-great-granddaughter, Harper Ann McKeever; grandson, Kenneth Navy, Jr.; great-granddaughter, Erin Navy; and a great-great-granddaughter, Delilah Lemons. She is also survived by her son, Kenneth Carothers and, daughter-in-law, Sandra Carothers; grandsons, James Carothers and Scott Carothers; Scott’s wife, Courtney Carothers; and a great-grandson, Noah Carothers. Also surviving Mrs. Carothers is her son, Keith Carothers; her daughter, Alice Kimberly Carothers; grandsons Taylor Wooten and Jordan Wooten; and a great-granddaughter, Annaleigh Wooten.She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Lena Joe was preceded in death by her husband, Stoney Carothers; and her daughter, Karen Navy. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
