COLUMBIA-Kenneth Wright Sulser, 93, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2015 in Columbia, SC.He was born in Hampshire County, West Virginia, son of Boyd Haven Sulser and Pearl Feaster Sulser.Ken was predeceased by his wife of seventy years, Evelyn Virginia Burke Sulser.Following a private family burial service officiated by the Reverend Dr. Ellen Skidmore of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, a memorial service officiated by the Reverend Dr. Fran Bragan, Chaplain for the Columbia Presbyterian Retirement Community, will be held in the Chapel of the Presbyterian Home, 700 DaVega Drive, Lexington, SC on Thursday, October 1 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation with the family will follow the service at the Presbyterian Home. Mr. Sulser began his career as a chemical engineer in Cumberland, Maryland with Celanese Corp. followed by positions with Dow Chemical Co. in Williamsburg, VA, Hercules Powder Co. in Covington, VA, Uniroyal in Winnsboro, SC and H.K. Porter in Pittsburg, PA.After serving as General Manager for Uniroyal’s rubber plantations in Sumatra, Indonesia, the Sulsers returned to Columbia, SC in 1971.Ken joined Vogue Press as a co-owner, retiring in 1996.Ken served on the Babcock Center Board of Directors for fifteen years and after retirement began volunteering at Babcock’s Phoenix Center providing day services for individuals with head and spinal cord injuries.In 2008 at age 86 he received the Community Impact Award presented by United Way for his service to Babcock Center and Phoenix Center. As avid golfers and beach lovers, Ken and Evelyn spent countless weekends at their beach homes along the North and South Carolina coasts and on their home courses at Spring Valley Country Club, Woodlands Country Club, Columbia Country Club, and the University Club. Ken is survived by his four children, Bill Sulser (Becky) of Lexington, SC, Norman Sulser (Mary) of Richmond, VA, Suetta Harrison (Robert) of Crozet, VA and Lois Green (Gene) of Columbia, SC and a brother, Ronnie Sulser of Fayetteville, NC along with thirteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Guelda (Max) Heming of Houston, TX. The family wishes to extend its sincerest appreciation to the staff of the Cassels Healthcare Center for the years of loving care provided Ken during his time at the Columbia Presbyterian Retirement Community.In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials may be made to PCSC-Employee Gift Fund or the South Carolina Presbyterian Retirement Communities Foundation at Presbyterian Communities of SC, 700 DaVega Drive, Lexington, SC 29073.
