Kenneth "K.B." Johnson

COLUMBIA—Kenneth Bernard “K.B.” Johnson, 83, passed away Saturday, February 28, 2015 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.He now joins the love of his life in heaven.Born in Charleston on August 12, 1931, he was a son of the late Vandorn Carl and Bertha Henrics Johnson.He served in the Korean War and was awarded a Korean Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars, a Merit Unit Commendation, and a UN Service Medal. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1958 and worked in banking for many years, including as Head of Operations with SCN, and was a founder and Senior Vice President of Republic National Bank.He served as president of the Touchdown Club in 1978, and was selected as Man of the Year by Midlands Technical College.He also operated many local businesses including Harvey’s, Beethovens, Grumps, Crow Bar, and Mayberrys, among others.K.B. was an avid Gamecocks football fan. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Betty Pruitt, his siblings Margaret Grumbach, Vandorn Johnson Jr., Mildred Adele Barton, and Bertha Joyce Johnson, and his precious dogs BeeGee, Clemmie, and Harvey. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Claudia (Jim) Young, Kimberly (Ken) Hammett, Betsy (Chip) Burn, and his precious grandchildren, Ansley, Tyler, and Henry Hammett, Connor and Riley Burn, Alex Davis, and Bill Young, and 3 great-grandchildren. A reception and celebration of K.B.’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 3, from 6:00-8:00 in the FLC of Zion Lutheran Church, 226 Corley Mill Road, Lexington, SC 29072. The burial will be private.Temples Halloran Funeral Home, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212 is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to the Animal Protection League, 6080 Old Leesburg Road, Hopkins, SC 29061. We would like to thank the many care givers at Agape that loved and cared for Dad, especially Lucinda, Bakari, Debra, Cynthia, Kim, and Annie.
