Katherine C. Samellas

Columbia-The funeral service for Katherine C. Samellas, 81, of Columbia, will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, September 25, 2020, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1910 Main Street, Columbia, SC 29201. The Reverend Father Michael A. Platanis and Father Chrysostom J. Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212. Trisagion prayers will be at 10:00 am with visitation from 10-11:00 am before the service at the church. Mrs. Katherine Crones Samellas, the beloved wife of the late Charles George Samellas and loving mother and Yiayia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, surrounded by family members. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Claire Crones. Along with her late husband, she was owner and operator of Granby’s Ice Cream and Sandwich Shop which was a staple in downtown Columbia for over 16 years. Yiayia/mom was an instrumental part of helping her son George with his restaurant Greek Boys. Her famous Spanikopita and Baklava were customer favorites. Katherine was a graduate of Lasell Jr. College in Newton, Massachusetts. She was a devoted member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. She was a member of the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society and spent countless hours helping with the Greek Festivals throughout the years. She was loved by many for her kindness and genuineness. Surviving are her daughter, Andrea Katherine Judy (Kenneth) of Woodbridge, VA; son George Charles Samellas of Columbia; brother George Crones; grandchildren, RJ and Ella Samellas, Collin, Austin, Raegan Judy.
