Katherine "Katty" Rumpel

Irmo— Katherine “Katty” Rumpel, affectionately known as “Granny.” 93, of Columbia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 30th.Born in Charleston, SC on August 21, 1924, she was the daughter of the late James G. Raxter and Ophelia Ballance Raxter.Katty and her husband of 50 years, “Big John” H. Rumpel, moved to Columbia in 1969 and then Irmo in 1973.They were longtime members of the First Baptist Church of Irmo and the “Coed 5” Sunday School Class where they made dear friends.Katty was an active knitter and crotcheter until the last weeks of her life donating much of her work to support the needs of others.Much of her crafts were created while watching and cheering on her Gamecocks.Katty exuded a genuine depth of concern for all. Katty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, “Big John,” and dearly loved granddaughter, Taylor Rumpel.She is survived by her daughter, Kay Richards (David), and son, Hank Rumpel (Peggy); two grandchildren, Chip Richards and Chris Richards (Rachel); two great grandchildren [which were her pride and joy] Tinley and Edie Richards; and her entire second family consisting of the amazing staff and residents of The Palmettos of Parklane. A private graveside service for will be held Saturday, February 3, 2018 in Bush River Memorial Gardens, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212.The memorial service will be held Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Irmo, 7068 Nursery Road, Columbia, SC 29212, officiated by Reverend Bill Messer and Reverend Blair Smith.The family will receive friends following the service at the church.Temples Halloran Funeral Home is assisting the family.
