Columbia--John W. Califf, Jr., 94, died at his home on Monday, October 30, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Sarah McKinnon Califf; his sons John W. Califf, Columbia, SC; Robert McKinnon Califf MD (Lydia Carpenter), Durham, NC & San Francisco, CA; James Christopher Califf MD (Laurie Lindsay), Blowing Rock, NC; and daughter Sarah Caroline Califf (John H. Phifer), Beaufort, SC; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Infant son Thomas Millford Califf preceded him in death on May 24, 1953. Born in Charleston, SC on December 18, 1922, he was the son of the late Caroline Sellers and John W. Califf, Sr., and brother of the late Toxey Haas Califf.He had fond memories of his youth in Charleston and enjoyed taking family on tours filled with historical fact and family anecdotes. John earned BS and BA degrees in Architecture with honors from Clemson University. His education was interrupted by service in the WWII where he was US Army I&R in the Battle of the Bulge.After graduation from Clemson, he worked for the university in publications and was the founder and first editor of the alumni newsletter. His lettering was used for the neon sign on the Clemson House. His architectural practice included the design of major projects in commercial, institutional, residential and educational fields in the state, including the South Carolina State Library, SC Welcome Centers, the Federal Building in Charleston, USC Horseshoe restoration & adaptive reuse, Richland Northeast High School, Downtown Restoration & Adaptive Reuse projects for several SC towns, many churches in the Midlands, and the Clemson University Alumni Center. He received the SCAIA Recognition Award for service as editor of Review 1982 and the SCAIA Preservation Merit Award for restoration and adaptive reuse of USC Horseshoe 1983. He was Editor of SCAIA Review of Architecture, 1966-1982, and author of manuscript, Millwood, Its Architecture and Ambiences. He was a member and designed the sanctuary of Bethel United Methodist Church, 4600 Daniel Drive, Columbia, SC.A member of The Historic Columbia Foundation, he was an avid student of history continuing to research and work on projects up until his death.John enjoyed sailing when at his Lake Murray cabin which he designed and built with his sons.He took pleasure in spending time with his dogs Girl (deceased) and Daisy and tending the goldfish in his backyard pond. A graveside service will be held Saturday at one o’clock in the afternoon, December 16, 2017 at Clemson University‘s Woodland Cemetery “Cemetery Hill”, Clemson, SC 29631. The Reverend Pam Ledbetter will officiate.
