Jean C. Barbour

Lord’s servant, Mama, Nana, family, teacher, and friend. Jean Coghill Barbour, 87, of Lexington, SC, died in Columbia on Tuesday, September 26, 2023. Jean was born Molly Jean Coghill in Vance County North Carolina in 1936 to the late Maurice Coghill. and Gladys Woodlief Coghill. Jean attended Henderson schools before studying education at Elon where she went on to become a teacher. She retired from the NC school system after 27 years teaching first grade and prior to moving to SC with her husband Bill and daughter Lori in 1984. She was a beloved member of Lexington United Methodist Church where she was also the preschool director for many years. Jean was preceded in death by William “Bill” Carson Barbour, husband; Sally Jo Guerrant, sister; Maurice Lee Coghill, Jr., brother. Surviving are her daughter, Lori Barbour Russell Meyers; grandson, Vernon Ernest Russell, III; Phil Coghill, brother of Louisiana. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at Lexington United Methodist Church with the Pastor Mack McDowell officiating. A private burial will take place at a later date at Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the parlor. Memorials may be made to Lexington United Methodist Church.
