James L. Underwood

The funeral service for James Lowell Underwood, 84, of Columbia, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2022, in the Chapel of Temples Halloran Funeral Home, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212.The Underwood Family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of the service.Burial will follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by the United States Army.The Reverend Jeff W. Childress, of Salem United Methodist Church, officiating. Professor Underwood was born on October 29, 1937, in Rome, GA, and departed this earthly life on January 8, 2022.He was the son of the late James S. Underwood and Mildred Chandler Underwood.Jim received his undergraduate and law degrees from Emory University where he was editor-in-chief of the law review.Following law school, he served three years as a captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the US Army and then earned his LLM from Yale. In 1966, Jim joined the University of South Carolina School of Law Faculty and taught there until his retirement in 2003.His title is “Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Law”.Jim was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. Surviving: his loving wife of 52 years, Joan Campbell Underwood of the home; daughter, Mary-Ann Belcher; grandsons, Joshua David, and Steven W. Belcher.He was preceded in death by his late parents.
