James Telfer passed peacefully on April 7, 2025 at Wellmore of Lexington in Lexington, South Carolina.
He was born in Chicago Illinois to William Telfer and Alice Hill Telfer. He was predeceased by his wife Beverly Ann Brown Telfer, and he is survived by his stepdaughter Ann Alexander.
James graduated from Northwestern University and received his M.Div. degree from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Over the years he held many positions including sports information and public relations at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio; Armco Steel, Middletown Ohio; public relations at Wagner College, Staten Island New York; advertising executive with N. W. Ayer Corporation based in Columbus, Ohio; vice-president of Capital University in Columbus, Ohio; vice president of marketing at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee, Illinois; and executive director of Harbison Community Association in Columbia, South Carolina. Mr. Telfer received many awards for his service as the Executive Director of the at Harbison Community in Columbia SC, including recognition from the SC State Senate for his service.
James was an active member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Columbia. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Wellmore and especially his devoted friends at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church for all the care they extended to him. A memorial service will be held 11:00 am on April 30, 2025, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts be made to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 6952 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29212.
