James Theodore "Doady" Mckinnon

September 25, 1933 — April 30, 2023

James McKinnon passed away peacefully on April 30, 2023, at the age of 89. He was born in Allendale, SC, September 25, 1933, the son of Rev. Robert H. McKinnon and Sarah McKella McKinnon. Doady served his country in the US Army for 3 years, serving for 2 years in Japan. He was a 1959 graduate of the University of South Carolina. For 30 years he worked for the South Carolina Department of Transportation as a Programmer and Project Supervisor in Accident Research. He was a faithful member of St. Andrews Baptist Church since 1967 serving as a deacon, RA Leader and on various committees. Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara Hollins McKinnon; daughters Aminie McKinnon Ford (Shannon) of Fort Mill, SC, and Jamie McKinnon Nelson (Kyle) of Mequon, WI; and four grandchildren, Will Ford (Alaina); David Ford (Constance); Dr. Avery Nelson (Eric) and Bethany Nelson Petsch (Alex). He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Robert K. McKinnon; and sister, Sarah McKinnon Califf. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at St. Andrews Baptist Church, 230 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29210. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the chapel from 1:00 pm until the time of the service. Interment will be private. The family wishes to especially thank the Staff of the Laurel Crest Skilled Nursing Unit for their loving and kind care of Doady these past weeks. Memorials may be made in Mr. McKinnon’s honor to St. Andrews Baptist Church, 230 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29210.
