COLUMBIA—James Elbert Metze, 94, of Columbia, funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 22, 2015 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 1301 Richland St., Columbia, SC 29201. Officiating will be The Reverend David R. Bauser.Burial will be private. The family will greet friends following the service in the Reception Room at the church. Memorials may be made to Ebenezer Lutheran Church General Fund, 1301 Richland St., Columbia, SC 29201 and/or Lutheran Hospice, 201 Fortress Drive, Chapin, SC 29036. Born in Little Mountain, SC, he was the son of the late John Quincy Metze and Bessie Lindler Metze. He was the youngest of 9 children and a graduate of Little Mountain High School. He proudly served in the Army Medical Corp and was a Veteran of WWII. James was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, the Men’s Bible Class, New Generation and an active volunteer.He retired from SCDMH working as a Security and Safety Officer.He enjoyed gardening and wood working. Surviving are his loving wife of 69 years, Gertrude D. Metze of the home; son, James L. Metze (Catherine) of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Diane M. Oliver (Pete) of Lexington; grandchildren, Victoria Agop, Jonathan Quincy Metze (Meg), Andrew Looney (Breanna) and Melissa Kolb (Stephen); great-grandchildren, Oliver and Elliott Agop, James Metze, Jacklin, Madison and Cameron Looney and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Olive M. Neely, Geneva M. Farler, Clara M. Henderson, Ola Mae M. Long, Enoree M. Lake, Harold E. Metze, Ray E. Metts and Johnnie C. Metze.
