Jack Patrick Saunders went home to be with his Lord and Savior on December 3, 2023. Jack was born in Florence, South Carolina on August 27, 1930 to the late Wilbur and Kate Saunders, and was their only child. Late in life, Jack worked for Midlands Technical College in the Computer Lab where he took great pride in assisting the students and encouraging them in their studies. Jack sat at the front desk in the Computer Lab and was known for his clock that ran backwards on the wall behind him. During his time there, he was a friend to both students and staff and was fondly known as Mr. Jack or Magic Jack. He retired in 2012, at the age of 82. Jack treasured the good friends he made at Midlands Technical College. Jack had a strong belief in Jesus and knew the Bible well. He loved telling stories of his love for the Lord and his appreciation of the life and family he was given, not a day went by that he did not mention he was blessed. Jack had a childhood full of close friends and adventures. He could tell colorful stories of fun and happiness despite growing up in the Depression. He worked at the airport in Florence, and got his pilot’s license at age 17. Jack proudly served in the Army as a young man, including a tour to Germany. While in Germany, he bought his first camera, a Rolleiflex and started a lifelong love of photography. He left the service after serving two years and moved his family to Columbia, South Carolina where he started a career in sales. He enjoyed his work traveling and meeting people, as he never met a stranger but always missed his family. Jack later worked for the Department of Social Services in the supply and warehouse for many years. Jack was a fascinating person that could tell a story that you were never sure if was true or a tall tale. He had a love for magic and could easily entertain with his humor and tricks. Jack always had a desire to learn whatever was the newest technology and kept his mind sharp by keeping his computer and audio system up to date. Jack had many hobbies in his younger years which included flying small planes, fishing, biking, boating, water skiing and radio control planes. While flying his radio control planes years ago he met Bill Rivers who also enjoyed the hobby. They would became great friends for many years. Jack had an especially strong love for all animals and was never without a pet, many of which he had rescued. He is survived by his five children, Penny Danielson (Bill) , Kim Randolph Hazlett (Phillip), John Wessinger (Ann), Matthew Saunders (Kimberly) and Robert Saunders (Cindy). Nine grandchildren Jason Danielson (Amanda), Scott Danielson, Travis Randolph, Sydney Wessinger, Jessie Wessinger, Chelsea Rotan (Jason), Amanda Halsey (James) Patrick Saunders, and Allison Saunders . He also had several great grandchildren. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by a grandson he dearly loved, Daniel Randolph. Jack’s smile and quick wit will be missed by both family and friends. There will be an inurnment at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery at a later date.
