Jack Marvin McBride, 89, of Columbia, SC went to be with his Redeemer on June 25, 2024, after a brief illness. Jack was born on August 25, 1934, to Milton Smith McBride and Carolyn Wilson McBride, of Spartanburg, SC. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Carolyn Inabinet McBride; his sister, Peggy McBride Thomas of Spartanburg, SC; his three children, Dr. Marvin (Dr. Ann) McBride, of Pittsboro, NC, Nancy (Rev. Dean) Turbeville of Charlotte, NC, and Suzanne (Dan) Eckstrom, of Columbia, SC; his eight grandchildren, Matthew (Megan) McBride, Dr. Jonathan (Dr. Elizabeth) McBride, Rebekah Shillinglaw, Aaron (Mollie) Turbeville, Lydia Turbeville, Eric (Sara) Eckstrom, Brian (Alyssa) Eckstrom, and Leah Eckstrom; his ten great-grandchildren, Nathan McBride, Harrison McBride, Charlotte McBride, Ezra Shillinglaw, Hadley Shillinglaw, Matilda Turbeville, Harriet Turbeville, Austin Eckstrom, Hudson Eckstrom, and Jack Eckstrom. Jack graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1952 and Spartanburg Junior College in 1954. He met the love of his life, Carolyn, when working together at Belk Department Store as part of their college work-study program. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1957 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and from the University of Tennessee in 1969 with a M.S. in Business. He was a veteran of the U.S. Naval Reserve, serving three years of active duty after graduation from college, and continuing to serve in the Reserve until his retirement as Commander in 1994. He held multiple leadership roles in both Greeneville and Kingsport, TN Reserve units, with his service culminating as Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Center in Columbia. Following active duty in the Navy, he began his career in 1960 with Eastman Kodak in Kingsport, TN, retiring in 1999 from Carolina Eastman after forty years. Jack was an Eagle Scout, a Licensed Professional Engineer, a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and was named the 1997 SC Ambassador for Economic Development by Governor Beasley. Jack was a man of strong Christian faith and integrity, serving as a deacon at Mayfair United Methodist Church (Kingsport), an elder at Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church (Columbia), and was a charter member and elder of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, where he was named Elder Emeritus in 2012. He loved serving the church and his community, including teaching Sunday School, leading bible studies, and sharing God’s Word with residents of local assisted living communities. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed following the University of South Carolina and University of Tennessee sports and watching Braves baseball. He loved his family passionately, and especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Papa Jack”. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 1:30 pm at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 6952 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29212. A time for visitation will be held after the service in The Gathering Place at the church. The family would like to thank MSA Hospice for their invaluable help and care.
