Herbert Boykin "Hub" Cooper, Jr.

October 26, 1938 — January 21, 2024

Herbert Boykin “Hub” Cooper Jr., 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 21st, 2024. He was the son of the late Herbert Boykin Cooper and Annie Viola Wise. Hub was born in Winnsboro, South Carolina, and served in the United States Air Force after high school. He was briefly stationed in Iceland and discovered a love for travel. He had a lifelong career in the Federal Aviation Administration: first in Charleston and later in Columbia, where he was able to combine work with his love for mathematics. He was passionate about the natural world (especially birds), studying astronomy, playing ping pong, snowboarding (even into his 70’s), and traveling. He and his wife, Carole, were active in both the Palmetto Shag and Capital City Shag clubs. Hub was a loving and supportive husband, father, and doting grandfather who loved spending time with his grandchildren and teaching them about his favorite things: science and nature. Hub leaves behind his loving wife, Carole; his sons, Mark (Ann), Casey; his daughter, Leslie (Waddill); his son: Jay Kornder; and his brother, Wayne (Kathryn) Wooten. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Russell, Lindsay, Spencer, and Eddie; and great-granddaughter, Dylan Fain. Hub was predeceased by his siblings Mary Anne, Gerald, David, and Vanessa. Hub will be buried in the Fort Jackson National Cemetery at a private service. Temple-Halloran Funeral Home is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift in Hub's memory to: Lutheran Hospice of South Carolina, 300 Ministry Drive Irmo, SC 29063 or online at: https://www.lutheranhomesscfoundation.org/donate-now
