Columbia—The memorial service for Herbert Milton “Herb” Brantley, Jr, 74, of Columbia, will be held on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Living Springs Lutheran Church, 4224 Hardscrabble Road, Columbia, SC 29223 with the Reverend Eric E. Fink officiating.The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall from 2:45 p.m.-3:45 p.m. Born in Columbia, SC on January 30, 1943 he was the son of the late Herbert M. Brantley, Sr. and the late Vivienne May Smith Brantley. He was a graduate of Dreher High School as well as the University of South Carolina.While a student at USC, Herb supported his young family by selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door, loading produce trucks at night at The Farmers Market, and even tried a stint at stock car racing at Columbia Speedway.After graduation he began a 20 year career with Goodyear Tire & Rubber before becoming an independent dealer operating two Guardian Tire & Service Stores in Columbia.Since retirement he has been busy assisting his son Todd at Professional Tire & Radiator. Until his health declinedHerb also delivered for Meals on Wheels, which he enjoyed very much. Herb was a activeand a longtime member of Living Springs Lutheran Church and was recently honored as part of the Lutheran Men in Mission for 37 years of service. He never met a stranger and he was a true friend to many. Survivors included his loving wife of 3 years, Gwenda Lee Brantley; sons, Michael V. “Mike” Brantley (Bonita) of St. Matthews,and Raymond Todd Brantley (Michelle) of Sandy Run,brother, James M. “Jim” Brantley (Gudrun) of Columbia; 3 grandchildren, Wade Barrett Smart (Ashley), Kristen Nicole Little (Bradley) and Jennifer Elizabeth Brantley; great-grandchildren, Wyatt Tanner Brantley Smart and Braxton Wayne Brantley. Those who have preceded him in death, besides his parents, his first wife, Alma.
