CHAPIN~A graveside service for Gequetta D. Cates, 68, Chapin, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 23, 2015 in Bush River Memorial Gardens, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Temples Halloran Funeral Home. Gequetta, beloved and devoted wife of Jim Cates, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2015. Born in Johnson City, TN, she was the daughter of the late Everett Alonzo Shelton and Wanda Kay Miller Shelton. Gequetta and Jim have been residence of Chapin since August 1988. She and her family were members for over 25 years at Christian Life Assembly Church. Gequetta worked as an interpreter for students who are hearing impaired for over 20 years at Lexington-Richland School District 5, Dutch Fork High School Brennen Elementary in Richland School District 1.She loved gardening and working with flowers as well as working out and opening her home to anyone for a glass of sweet tea or hot coffee. She will be remembered as a wonderful interior designer who devoted her life to her entire family and friends. Surviving are her husband of 49 years, James H. "Jim" Cates; daughter Amy Renea Cates of Chapin; son Troy James Cates and wife, Sherry of Irmo; sister, Brenda Kay Smith of Sevierville, TN; grandchildren, Merry Anna Cates, David James Cates and Molly Caroline Cates. She was preceded in death by her sister, Paula Jackie Dunn. Memorials ay be toe Alzheimer's Association, Midland Area, 140 Stoneridge Drive, Suite #210, Columbia, SC 29210
