WEST COLUMBIA—Dr. Fred Samuel Miller, Jr., 87, of West Columbia died Thursday, February 5, 2015 at his residence at Laurel Crest with his loving family by his side.Born September 21, 1927, in Union, SC he was the son of the late Fred Samuel Miller, Sr. and Urphie Fowler Miller. Reverend Miller proudly served his country in the United States Army. Dr. Miller was a graduate of Union High School, Class of 1944; Furman University, Greenville, SC, BA Degree 1950-53; Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, NC, Bachelor of Divinity 1953-57 converted to Master of Divinity 1974. He was awarded Doctor of Divinity Degree by Furman University 1985 and by Charleston Southern University 1985. Dr. Miller’s ministry experience included, Pastor at Saint Andrews Baptist Church Columbia, 1977-93, Pastor at Fort Johnson Baptist Church, Charleston 1960-77, Pastor at Scranton Baptist Church, Scranton 1956-60, Pastor at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church, Union 1952-56. His services and affiliations include, Board of Trustees, Furman University, 1966-71, and Board of Trustees, Baptist Healthcare System (now Palmetto Health Baptist) 1987-2014. Board of Directors, South Carolina Baptist Convention 1971-87.President, General Board of the South Carolina Baptist Convention 1982-83. Surviving in addition to his beloved wife of 64 years, Evelyn Meador Miller of West Columbia; sons, Samuel Judson Miller and wife, Mimi of Summerville, David Michael Miller and wife, Susan of Charleston and Stephen FrederickMiller of Greenville; grandchild, Jason Michael Miller.He was preceded in death by two sisters, Vera Surrett and Louise Hill. The funeral service for Dr. Fred S. Miller, Jr. will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2015 at Saint Andrews Baptist Church, 230 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29210.Dr. Ronald D. “Dee” Vaughan and Reverend M. Fred DeFoor, Jr. will officiate.The family will receive friends from 1:00 -3:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service.Burial will be private and held at a later time.
