June 22, 1941 — November 13, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Emma Jeanne Shrum Calhoun, aged 83, on November 13, 2024, at Prisma Health Baptist Parkridge Hospital. She departed peacefully, surrounded by her beloved family. Jeanne was born on June 22, 1941, in Lincolnton, North Carolina, to Everett Eugene and Bessie Boyd Shrum. On April 3, 1971, she married Phillip Carroll Calhoun, and together they nurtured a loving family with three children. A proud graduate of Lincolnton High School in 1959, she continued her education at Lees McRae College in 1961, and earned her degree in Medical Records Administration from Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1962. Jeanne dedicated her career to the health field, serving as a Medical Records Administrator in hospitals in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Columbia and Barnwell, South Carolina. Jeanne’s selflessness and compassion were hallmarks of her character, and her unwavering dedication to helping others touched countless lives. She was a devoted member of the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) for over 30 years, and for more than two decades, she served as the Repast Coordinator, providing nourishing meals for families following funerals. For the past ten years, she held the role of president of the Agape Sunday School Class at Riverland Hills Baptist Church, ensuring that members remained connected and supported. Through her acts of kindness, generosity, and love, Jeanne embodied the true spirit of altruism, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Jeanne is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Phillip Carroll; her children, Robert Eugene (Christie), Matthew Phillip (Lori), and Elizabeth Christine (Rick); and her six cherished grandchildren, Alex and Lily Calhoun, Andrew and Olivia Calhoun, and Manning and Sarah Beth Green. She is also survived by her nephew and niece, Smitty and Gail Little. Jeanne was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Elizabeth (Charles) Little. A memorial service celebrating Jeanne’s life will be held at Riverland Hills Baptist Church on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM, with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Riverland Hills Baptist Church Missions Fund, the Gideon Bible Fund, or a charity of one's choice in her memory. Jeanne will be greatly missed and will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her legacy of love and service will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to call her family and friend.
