COLUMBIA—Mrs. Emily D. Burklow Clouse, also known as “Baby”, 89, died Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Palmetto Health Parkridge Hospital.Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at St. Andrews Baptist Church, 230 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29210, conducted by Reverend Dr. Ronald “Dee” Vaughan and Reverend M. Fred DeFoor, Jr.The family will receive friends in the chapel of the church from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.Entombment will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in Anderson Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Clinton, Tennessee, conducted by Dr. Justin Anderson, grandson-in-law of Emily. Born in Rutherford, NJ, she was the daughter of the late, Stapleton Conway Deitrick and Emily “Emmy” Beverly Randolph Deitrick.Emily graduated from Nutley High School in Nutley, NJ, where she met her future husband and love of her life, Troy Noel Burklow, Jr.She was a majorette and Troy, a football star at Nutley High School.Troy served his country in United States Navy while Emily went toWesthampton College, University of Richmond, where, playing 4 years of collegiate sports, she was captain of the basketball team and all state in field hockey her senior year.That year she was the proud recipient of the Seal Award which is the highest award from the Westhampton Athletic Association given for exceptional sportsmanship and contagious enthusiasm, which Emily exhibited all throughout her life.She also served as an officer for 4 years in the Physical Education and Mathematics Clubs while in College.She graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics; only 1 of 9 BS degrees awarded at the Woman’s College that year.In December of 1948 she married Troy and they moved to Cookeville, TN where she took an accountant position with Southern Continental Telephone Company while Troy pursued his engineering degree at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute, now Tennessee Tech. The family moved from Cookeville to Oak Ridge in 1953 for Troy’s employment as a mechanical engineer and to raise their family.The family was a member of Central Baptist Church in Oak Ridge, TN.Once all of her children were in school, she began her career with the City of Oak Ridge.Emily later returned to school to attain an Associate Degree in Computer Programing and worked for the city’s data processing department for many years.Emily was very active in bowling, softball, tennis, as well as coaching both her daughter’s softball and basketball teams. Following the death of her first husband in 1993, she became very active in competitive ballroom dancing.Emily’s tennis team placed 2nd in a national tournament in Arizona. She met her second husband, Robert Clouse, while playing tennis. They traveled extensively throughout the world and were avid supporters for the University of Tennessee Women’s Basketball and Men’s Baseball Teams as well as the Atlanta Braves. Following Bob’s death in 2007, Emily moved to Chapin, SC and continued her involvement in various activities, especially numerous bridge clubs where she not only was the frequent winner of the “quarters” but more importantly developed new and lasting friendships.She will be remembered for her “contagious” smile as well as being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Surviving are daughter, Lynn Holmes, husband Van of Chapin; sons, Troy Burklow III and fiancé Katherine Hart of Knoxville, TN; Paul Burklow Sr. and wife, Guncel of Jeffersonville, IN; three step-daughters, Dana Hensley and husband Sam of Kingston, TN, Mary Underwood and husband David, of Knoxville, TN, Linda Stiles and husband, Charles of Chesapeake, VA; brother, Lingan Deitrick and wife Sally of Winter Haven, FL; sister,Frances “Faffy” Hooper of Whiting, NJ; brother-in-law, Tom Burklow and wife, Kathy of Pompton Plains, NJ; sister-in-law, Ruth Roberts and husband Al of Huntley, IL; grandchildren Emily Anderson and husband Justin, Brandon Holmes, Noel Holmes, Chelsea Burklow, Troy Burklow IV, Paul Burklow Jr., Jason Burklow and wife Alisa, Tara Edwards and husband Andrew, Sean Burklow, Niko Burklow, Courtnay Underwood, Clint Hensley, Sam Hensley, Meagan Stiles, Taylor Stiles; great-grandchildren, Raylan Anderson, Addy Edwards and Ty Edwards; former daughter-in-laws Susanne Burklow of Tempe, AZ and Liz DiGiglia of Lake Charles, LA. Those who preceded her in death in addition to her two husbands are her brother, Stapleton “Dee” Conway Jr. and sister, Elsie Halford. The family of Emily Clouse would like to thank the Doctors, nurse, and entire staff at Palmetto Health Parkridge for the wonderful care given to their Mother at the time of her illness.
