Ellen Ada Sutton

October 14, 1933 — January 12, 2019

COLUMBIA-- Ellen Ada Sutton passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 12, 2019, in Columbia, SC, after a brave battle against various illnesses. Ellen was born on October 14, 1933, in El Paso, Texas to Joseph and Mary Caron. Joe was a career United States Army officer and the last of the American horse cavalrymen, and he instilled in Ellen a love of country, travel, and horses. After high school, Ellen got her BS in nursing and not long thereafter met her husband Ed Sutton, a dashing United States Air Force fighter pilot. Ellen and Ed were an inseparable pair until Ed’s death in 2004. As a Colonel in the Air Force, they traveled the country and the world with notable assignments in Alaska and Japan. Ellen supported Ed through two significant combat tours in Vietnam and was with him during the Great Anchorage Quaker of 1964. After Ed’s death in 2004, Ellen moved to Columbia to be near her family. In Columbia, Ellen made dear friends and could be seen jetting around in her red sports car, on Wednesday evening at Bonefish Grill, and watching her two favorite teams—the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Cowboys. Ellen is survived by her sister, Mary Fox and her nephew Jim Ewart, in whose life she played a major role and his family. In accordance with Ellen’s wishes, she will be cremated and a private Celebration of Life memorial will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the many caregivers and friends who loved and supported Ellen throughout her life and in her illnesses.
