Durham T. Harrison, Jr., 85, of Irmo, SC passed away on July 7, 2024, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Lexington Medical Extended Care and Hospice for their skilled care and compassion in assisting the family in navigating this disease. Durham was born on July 14, 1938, in Columbia, SC. He was the only child of Durham T. Harrison, Sr., and Ina Thomas Harrison of Williston, SC. He is survived by his wife of 62 + years, Beverly Cawley Harrison. Also surviving are his three children, Amy Conley (Scott) of Columbia, Durham Harrison, III (Sherry) of Chapin, and April Harbin (Jim) of Charlotte, NC; Six grandchildren Chris Conley (Katie) of Lexington, SC; Charron Brown (Ethan) of Winnsboro, SC; Megan Mummert (Andrew) of Summerville, Taylor West (Ian) of Charlotte, NC, Haley White (Josh) of Charlotte, NC, and Dylan Harbin of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Cale Conley, Keenan Conley, Israel Brown, Lydia Brown, August Mummert, Blakely White, and Charles Mummert. Durham attended the Citadel where he played alto sax with Band Company. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Business Administration, and began his career at Wilbur, Smith & Associates, then moved to Talbot, Cox. Durham transitioned to state government working at the SC Budget and Control Board, and then retired from the Insurance Reserve Fund where he played a major role in settling Hurricane Hugo claims and rebuilding the state’s infrastructure along the coast. Durham enjoyed fast cars, boats, and airplanes. He shared his passion of flying by assisting the SC Forestry Commission in searching for wildfires, and flying children with burn injuries to various Shriners Hospitals across the nation. He was a Past Commander of Jamil Temple’s Flying Fezzes, a Life Member of Boyleston Lodge 123 AFM, a member of Lake Murray Power Squadron, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, EAA Chapter 242, Quiet Birdman’s flying club, and Union United Methodist Church in Irmo, SC. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 15, 2024, at Temples-Halloran Funeral Home in the Chapel at 11:00 am. The family will greet friends from 10:00 am to 10:45 am prior to the service at the funeral home. A private entombment will follow at Bush River Memorial Gardens.
