Douglas "Doug" Kurt Schueler

COLUMBIA—Douglas Kurt Schueler, 67, passed away Monday, September 8 after a brief illness. Born on April 2, 1947 in Willmar, Minnesota, Doug was the son of the late Erick Kurt Schueler and Elsa Evelin (Evelyn) Swenson.Doug graduated from Raymond High School, 1965 and in 1969 graduated with honors from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD with a BS in mathematics; he attended Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, FL, graduating with a MS in mathematics in 1971.He moved to Columbia and worked at USC in the mathematics Doctoral Program through the spring of 1972.He joined the SC Industrial Company as an actuary and later moved over to the State Fund (now, SC State Accident Fund).Doug joined Fred S. James Commission, later Sedgewick-James, now Sedgewick Claims Management from which he retired as VP Account Executive, specializing in Workman’s Comp Cases. Doug was predeceased by his parents and brother, Darrell D. Schueler of Webster,MN and is survived by his wife, Margie Tillotson-Schueler of the home; daughter, Chloe S. Jaco (Anthony) of Columbia, SC; granddaughter, Colette Cheyenne Jaco and grandson, Delsin Kurt Jaco, both of Columbia; sister-in-law, Carol Ling Schueler of Webster, MN; nephews, Kirby Schueler (Juanita) of Lonsdale, MN, Bryan Schueler (Bonnie) of Eagan, MN and Kenneth Schueler (Beth) of Zumbrota, MN. In recent years, Doug faithfully worked and volunteered for the Olympia Community.He had a passion for helping to better Olympia, serving on Boards of the OCFA and the Olympia Community Education Foundation.On Many a Saturday, Doug Could be found volunteering be found volunteering for the CCA at 701 Whaley, monitoring exhibits or just helping out with the new artist’s installation.He just enjoyed being involved with 701. Over the past several years, Doug had been a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, serving on various committees.He loved the challenges of his Sunday School Classes and always wanted to teach and learn about all religions.He had been a student of Religion, reading, studying and seeking to find answers. The family would like to say much appreciation to his great friend, William Tucker for always just being there for Doug.Many special Thanks to the staff on the 5th floor tower at Providence Hospital, Forest Drive, for their tireless care of Doug and to all attending physicians, especially Dr. Allan Henderson of Providence Family Practice; his compassion, sensitively, and willingness just to talk and listen were beyond extraordinary. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, September 12, 2014 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 3909 Forest Drive, Columbia, SC 29204.The family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service in the church Narthex.The family would like to extend an invitation to join them for a reception following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.Inurnment will be held at a later date at his old home place in Minnesota. Temples Halloran Funeral Home is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any animal rescue organization of your choice.
