Columbia—William David Gettys, 83, passed away on January 23, 2019. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Chris Denny officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will be held in Bush River Memorial Gardens, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212 following the service. Memorials can be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1715 Broad River Rd., Columbia, SC 29210. David was born in McCormick County, SC, on March 8, 1935, to the Reverend Doctor Erwin F. Gettys and his wife Lillian. David was a graduate of Presbyterian College and also served in the US Army.He worked for many years and retired from the South Carolina Employment Security Commission. He was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he served in many capacities. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with friends, especially at the breakfast club or watching Gamecock football. He and his wife loved to travel and also enjoyed spending time with family. He will be remembered as one who served humbly not wanting to receive credit for all that he did.He will also be remembered as a loving husband, a caring father and grandfather, and a devoted friend. His calm demeanor and fun sense of humor will be missed. David is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Lewis Gettys; his children, David Gettys (Dawn), Robert Gettys (Jennifer), and Catherine Hutchings (Wyne); his grandchildren, Michael Gettys (Michelle), Sean Gettys, Johnny Medlin, Nate Hutchings, Rachel Hutchings, and Jordan Gettys; his brother Erwin Gettys (Ruth); his sisters, Margaret Pyle, Vera Hood (Charlie); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Erwin and Lillian Gettys, his sisters, Barbara Strom, Hildreth Strom, Nellie Campbell, and his brother, James Gettys.
