The funeral service for David Wilson Blackwelder will be held on Monday, July 10, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in the Temples-Halloran Funeral Home Chapel (5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212). The Reverend Chris Denny will be officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Burial with US Navy honors will follow the service in Bush River Memorial Gardens. David was born in York, South Carolina, to Bennett Blackwelder and Grace White Blackwelder on July 31, 1932. He passed away at 90 years of age on Friday, July 7, 2023. He served in the US Navy from 1951 until 1955 and earned the rank of SK2. David retired from Allied Chemical (Honeywell) as a shipping and receiving supervisor after 29 years of service. David was a member of the Irmo Fire Department from 1963 as a volunteer until 2015 as Commissioner. He coached Dixie Youth Baseball in Irmo in the mid-1960’s. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1963, serving as treasurer, elder, deacon, ground maintenance, building maintenance, and usher. In addition, David was also involved with the Go-Getters and Homes for Habitat and he cooked for church suppers and drove the van to church events. He also enjoyed square dancing. David was associated with Temples-Halloran Funeral Home since its beginning. David is survived by his sons, David Blackwelder (Tami Carpenter Blackwelder) of Irmo and Victor Blackwelder (Cathy McKinney Blackwelder) of Prosperity; his sister, Alice Smith Crocker; his grandchildren, Matt Blackwelder (Janna), Cody Blackwelder (William Blackwelder), and Michael Blackwelder (Sarah); eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Cunnup Blackwelder; his son, David Brenton Blackwelder; and his brother William (Bill) Blackwelder and sister-in-law, Sandra Catoe Blackwelder. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to Westminster Presbyterian Church (1715 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210).
