Curtis (Curt) R. Hutchinson, Sr. passed away on May 3, 2023, after a brief illness. He was 81. The family will hold an interment and service celebrating his life on May 27 at 11:00 AM at Bush River Memorial Gardens, Columbia, South Carolina. Born on July 20, 1941, Curt was the second of three children born to James Harvey Hutchinson and Nancy Skaggs Hutchinson. He was born in Sandy Hook, Kentucky at their homeplace and lived in several cities before Harvey bought a family farm in Danleyton, Kentucky where he spent most of his early years. He graduated from Wurtland High School in 1959, where he played both baseball and basketball. He moved to Americus, Georgia to play basketball on scholarship at South Georgia Technical School where he earned an Electronics Degree. On June 16, 1963, he wed Marie Bledsoe Hutchinson in Pinehurst Baptist Church. Married for 57 years, they spent the first year living in Cocoa Beach, Florida where Curt worked as an electronics technician with RCA at the Kennedy Space Center and Marie worked as a GS5 Secretary with Strategic Air Command for Patrick Air Force Base. After a year, they moved back to Curt’s hometown and lived 37 and a half years in Flatwoods, Kentucky where Curt worked as an electronics technician for Armco Steel and Marie worked as a homemaker. Curt retired from Armco Steel in 2002 and they moved to Chapin, South Carolina on Lake Murray. Curt was a devoted husband, father and “PopPop”. He was a good provider while still making sure to have time to coach his sons in baseball and be involved in their other interests. While raising a family, Curt enjoyed family camping vacations that often included extended family visits and fishing in nearby lakes somewhere along their travels. Curt was a lover of the outdoors – sports, gardening, horseback riding, fishing and hunting were early past-times passed along to his children and grandsons. Being a PopPop to his three J’s, as he lovingly referred to his grandsons, was the highlight of his life. If you talked to Curt for more than five minutes, you would undoubtedly hear how and what his grandsons were doing and just how proud of each of them he was. One of his favorite things to do with the three J’s was to take each of them in the motor home back to Kentucky and make them all “Kings for the Day”. Those “days” normally lasted for 2 weeks at a time. As the King, each J got to be in charge of all the fun activities, meals, and snacks for those 2 weeks. As they got older there were many trips to the lake for fishing and swimming and lots of fish frys with their friends. He loved watching the J’s in all their sports and rarely would he miss a baseball, basketball or football game if they were playing. He loved his country and Bluegrass music and frequently took trips to watch some festivals over the years. Later in life he got to see the West and all the places he wanted to see that Louie L’Amour would write about. He took frequent trips out West with his dear friend and traveling companion, Pat Darby, as well as spending time in Florida in the winters. Curt was a good man but was not a religious man over the course of his life. Thankfully in his final days he accepted the Lord as his savior and became a Christian. He is now reunited with Marie and his mother Nancy and many others that have prayed for him over the years. Curt was predeceased by his wife Marie in 2020 and is survived by his sons Curtis Hutchinson (Lisa) of Irmo, South Carolina, and Kenneth Hutchinson (Amy) of Spartanburg, South Carolina, grandsons Jacob Hutchinson (Lindsey) of Greensboro, North Carolina, Justin Hutchinson of Orlando, Florida, and Joshua Hutchinson of Charleston, South Carolina, great grandson Duke Hutchinson of Greensboro, sister Freda Johnson of Danleyton, Kentucky, brother Boyd Allen Hutchinson (Carol) of Danleyton, Kentucky and numerous nieces and nephews.
