Charles Franklin Noll, Jr. 91, of West Columbia, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 30, 2022. His graveside service will be held on Friday, October 7, at 10:00 a.m. at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229. The Noll Family will receive friends on Thursday, October 6, 2022, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Temples Halloran Funeral Home, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212. Born in Allentown, PA on October 9, 1930, Charles (aka Charlie and Sarge) was the son of the late Charles F. Noll, Sr. and Mable Widener Fenstermaker. Charles proudly served his country in the U.S. Army with over 20 years of dedicated service and completing tours of duty in Bamberg, Germany; South Korea, and Vietnam. Prior to becoming a drill instructor, he was instrumental in organizing and leading the award-winning Military Drum and Bugle Corps in Germany and at Fort Jackson. In addition to his Army career, he raced stock cars in the 1950s competing against future NASCAR greats like Cale Yarborough. Later he built and raced go-carts at local tracks around Columbia, Swansea, Great Falls, Camden, and Sumter. He and his youngest son Mark formed a racing team in the 1980-90s and competed against the locals as well as each other. Surviving is his son, Alan F. Noll (Judy Mayben Noll) of West Columbia; granddaughters Jennifer Noll; Alison Ciminnisi (Tim) and great-grandsons, Brooks and Hayes; grandson, Nathan Noll (Brittany), great-grandsons, Mark and Hunter; Stepbrother, Robert Noll of Breinigsville, PA; stepsister, Wilma Shoemaker of Jacksonville, NC; stepdaughters, Gwenda Nates of Columbia; Beverly Nates of West Columbia; stepson Donn Ridener of Augusta, GA; and a bevy of step grand and great-grandchildren. And his dancing partner of over 15 years Eva Tyson of Columbia. The two of them were regulars at VFW dances and Shag Club events everywhere. Charles was predeceased by his younger sister, June Noll; son, Mark Noll, daughter, Patsy Evans; his wife, Flora R. Noll.
