Catherine Weber Meade

Catherine Weber Meade, 88, of Columbia, SC, formerly Hillsboro, OH, passed away on January 24, 2021. She was born in Cincinnati, OH to the late Robert and Fay Weber, and graduated from Denison University and Tufts University. She is predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Kenneth Meade, and brother, Richard Weber. Catherine is survived by her children: Douglas Meade (Betsy) of Columbia, SC and Ellen Steele (Al) of Tempe, AZ; grandchildren: Stuart Grimes (Jesse), Michael Grimes, Marybeth Grimes, Bradley Meade, Sarah Steele, Elizabeth Steele, and Jennifer Steele; and great-granddaughter: Elizabeth Grimes. She was most proud of her career as a mother, where she was well-known for her constant supply of cookies and commitment as a Girl Scout leader and Sunday School teacher. As her children grew, she was a co-owner of Caryl’s dress shop in Hillsboro and worked as an occupational therapist at Hopewell Center. Catherine was a member and officer of Hillsboro Lions Club, AAUW, Highland County Historical Society, American Occupational Therapy Association, Retired Teachers Association, Hillsboro City School Board, and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She had many interests and hobbies, including quilting, knitting, sewing, reading, and playing bridge. She was very musical, enjoying playing the piano, handbells, and flute and singing in the church choir. She loved conversing with people, young and old. Catherine was a long-time member of Hillsboro First United Methodist Church and, since moving to Columbia, SC in 2013, she worshipped at Windsor United Methodist Church. She was also an active and enthusiastic member of the Wilmington Area Emmaus (OH) and Emmaus of the Midlands (SC) communities. Her family wants to thank the staff of Watercrest Senior Living Columbia and All Seasons Hospice for their care, encouragement, and friendship during the past year.
