Bettie Josey Carter, 93, passed away in Columbia, South Carolina on Sunday, March 31, 2024. She was born in Timmonsville, South Carolina on May 9, 1930, to Joshua James and Martha “Mattie” Baker Roberson and was the youngest daughter of their seven children. Bettie met and married William “Bill” Carter, of Darlington, South Carolina on August 18, 1947, and they celebrated 54 years of marriage. Bill was a member of the U.S. Navy, stationed up and down the east coast throughout his career. Upon his retirement, they settled in Columbia, South Carolina and continued to raise their four children. Bettie was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; son, Maxcy Carter; granddaughter, Jenny Carter; great-grandson, Noah Carter; seven biological brothers and sisters, Ralph Roberson, Winnie Roberson, Lola Blanton, Buena McPherson, Thelma McPherson, Druid Roberson, and Alvin Roberson; and nine half-siblings. She is survived by her children, Martha Carter of Columbia, South Carolina; Marvin Carter (Becky) of Chapin, South Carolina; Joey Carter (Pam) of Greenville, South Carolina, and daughter-in-law Patti Carter McKown of Chapin, South Carolina. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Michelle McCoy (Bryan), Kristin Wichman (Brian), Mark Harris (Erin), Matt Carter (Emma), Doug Carter (Holly), Brian Carter (Lacey), and Bobby Carter (Jasmine), as well as seven great-grandchildren, Hayden McCoy, Jett Wichman, Maxci Wichman, Madison Wichman, Braddock Carter, Asher Carter, and Keever Carter. Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 13, at 11:00 a.m. at Riverland Hills Baptist Church, 201 Lake Murray Blvd, Irmo, South Carolina 29063, where she was a charter member. There will be a reception following the service for all guests. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Riverland Hills Baptist Church to the missions, handbell, and traditional service choral programs. Bettie led a very blessed and active life filled with family, friends, and church. She dedicated her life in service to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and lived by her favorite passage, Philippians 4:6 – 7. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and yours minds in Christ Jesus.” Bettie was loved and will be greatly missed by all.
