On November 25, 2024, Becky Lee Dyer, 77, of Irmo, S.C. went to be with her Savior, whom she had loved for over 50 years, after fighting lung cancer.
Our mother was born in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio to Clinton Dyer and Connie Sanderson Dyer. She was the youngest of three children. She graduated from York-Suburban High School in York, Pennsylvania, in 1965.
She moved to Columbia in 1969 after her marriage to James Geesey. Together they had two daughters, Laura Geesey Staley, and KimGeesey Justice. She devoted her life to raising us, and was always actively engaged with our schoolwork, music, and sports. She taught us how to cook, sew, and to love God. She was our biggest fan and greatest source of encouragement. There was never any doubt about her support, commitment, and love. She exemplified the beauty of motherhood and faith in Jesus. Unafraid to speak her mind, she tempered her opinions with kindness. She was persistent, determined, and steadfast.
Mom had seven grandchildren: Amber and Trey Justice, and Summer Justice Eidson; Courtney, Matthew, and Rebekah Copeland, and Jimmy Staley. She loved animals, gardening, birds, especially hummingbirds, and spending time with friends and family.
Becky attended the University of South Carolina, earning her Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, from 1982 to 1987, graduating cum laude.
She was a member of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church beginning with its early years at McGregor Presbyterian. She was actively involved in the church ministry, Bible studies, and ladies’ groups.
Becky was a serial crafter who loved making beautiful things. When we were small she sewed clothes, especially Easter Dresses, and encouraged expression through crafting and handmade projects. She was an avid student of William Holland School of Lapidary Arts, following in her father’s jewelry-making footsteps. She wasn’t opposed to taking risks! She loved to travel, especially on cruises, had a timeshare in the Cayman Islands, swam with sharks and manatees, learned to scuba dive, and even jumped out of airplanes a couple times. Her last trip was an Alaskan cruise, a few weeks before her cancer diagnosis.
Everyone who knew our mother loved her. She would drop everything to help or support the people she cared about (and she made the BEST stuffing at Thanksgiving). Her bread and butter pickles and chocolate turtles were practically legendary. She freely shared her experience and skills with anyone who asked. To know our mother was to see her as a patchwork quilt of beauty, talent, and grace—gifts she shared without hesitation.
Mom’s brother, David Dyer, went to be with the Lord in 2019. She is survived by her sister, Carol Walker, and her family (Brad, Doug, and Sarah); David Dyer’s children, Jon and Michelle and their families; her daughter, Laura Staley, and her family (Courtney, Matthew, Rebekah, and Jimmy); and her daughter, Kim Justice, and her family (Amber, Trey, and Summer). Rebekah is expecting mom’s first great-grandchild, Emma Joy, in April.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cornerstone Presbyterian Church.
Celebration of Life Services will be held 2:00pm on December 10, 2024, at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends before and after the service.
Romans 8:31-39
“31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.
34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Galatians 2:20
”20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
John 3:16
“16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
1st John 4:7-12
(This is the first scripture I remember memorizing under her guidance. I can still hear her voice quoting it in my head.)
“7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.
8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.”
