Avice P. Brock

July 21, 1949 — September 27, 2023

Avice was born in Columbia, SC, at the Providence Hospital on July 21, 1949, while her parents Fletcher and Esther Hunt Padget, were living at the Colonial Village Apartments. The family soon moved to the Earlewood neighborhood, and then moved to the St. Andrews area of Columbia when Avice was 10. A product of Columbia public education, Avice attended McCants Elementary School, St. Andrews Elementary School, Wardlaw Junior High School, and the old Columbia High School downtown on Washington Street, graduating in 1967. Her freshman year in college was spent at Furman University in Greenville, SC, but she graduated from Columbia College in 1970 with a B.A. in Education. In August of that same year, she married Jacob W. Brock of Harlem Georgia. Her work career began with teaching French at Booker T. Washington High School and continued for many years at C & S Bank and NationsBank, before concluding at Ace Hardware in Parkland Plaza. Growing up Avice was athletic, popular, and always a good student. She enjoyed softball, and tap dancing, and later became a member of the Palmetto State Cloggers. As a teen she mastered all the many early Rock and Roll dances of the 1960’s, and with husband, Jake could entertain onlookers on any dance floor with their shagging skills. Avice contributed a strong alto and musical accompaniment on the baritone ukulele in countless family sing-alongs. Many folks will remember her many years of dedicated jogging through the St. Andrews area. Usually “the life of the party,” Avice was in her element organizing holiday celebrations and planning and cooking for get-togethers with family and friends. Avice was a generous, loyal, and loving wife, daughter, sister, and aunt. She was predeceased by her parents, Fletcher and Esther Hunt Padget; her in-laws, Wallace Watson Brock and Jay Lou (Watts) Brock; and her nephew Wade Brock and is survived by her husband, Jake Brock; brothers Hank Padget of Columbia, SC, and Mark (K.C.) Padget of Jacksonville, FL; nephews, Jason Putnam of Jacksonville, FL, Travis (McKenzie) Padget of Jacksonville, FL, niece, Samantha Padget (Pablo) Perez of Loxahatchee, FL, Brother in law Larry (Phyllis) Brock, nephew Larry Brock Jr., niece Gina ( Eric) Burton, niece Laura (Boone) Peeler, six great nieces, six great nephews, and good friend and caregiver, Doris Kyle. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a gift to a charity of your choice in Avice's memory.
