Alva Oris Humphries, Jr, (80), of Columbia, South Carolina experienced his faith becoming sight on December 29, 2023. He passed away peacefully with family by his side after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Alva was born to Alva Oris Humphries, Sr, and Hazel Lennie (née McCutcheon) Humphries on January 6, 1943 in Lake City, South Carolina. He was a talented athlete, playing football and running track at Lake City High School. He graduated from THE University of South Carolina in 1965 with a degree in marketing, having also completed his officer training for the United States Marine Corps while in college. Alva entered active duty at the rank of Second Lieutenant and was quickly promoted to the rank of Captain while completing a tour in Vietnam. Following his service to our country, he then became a successful businessman in both the financial services and insurance sectors. Alva also became a pillar in his community, serving as a member of the SC House of Representatives as well as an Elder at Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church and Faith Presbyterian Church. Aside from Alva’s unwavering love for his wife of many years, his greatest joys were watching and coaching his children and eventually his grandchildren in their various sports and activities. Alva would never miss an opportunity to be present with them whenever possible. In addition to his love for his entire family, Alva was a man of deep faith with a heart for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He tried to show his love for Jesus to everyone he ever met with both his deeds and words. Alva's example has had a profound impact on his entire family and hundreds more along the way. As we mourn the loss of Alva on this side of Heaven, we celebrate a life well-lived that honored his merciful Savior, his cherished family, and his beloved country. May his legacy continue on through all who knew and were influenced by him. Alva is survived by his loving wife, Debbie, his children Shannan Humphries, Jason (Lorrie) Humphries, Christyn (Jay) McLaughlin, David (Shawna) Humphries, and Stephen (Taryn) Humphries, as well as his 12 precious grandchildren (Jack, Jon, Joseph, Caleb, Jayce, Josh, Jordan, Hazel, Sophia, Gabe, Bella, and Taylor), his sister, Wanda Hudson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Alva's family will host a visitation at Faith Church (1811 Dutch Fork Rd, Irmo SC 29063) on Friday, January 5, 2024 from 11AM to 1PM, followed immediately by a service. For those unable to attend, the service will be live streamed at Alva Oris Humphries .
