Alden Rodney Gainey

Alden Rodney Gainey (Rodney) went home to be with his Lord on March 29, 2025. He was at home with his beloved wife of 37 years, Ann, who was by his side at the time of his passing.

Rodney was born on September 14,1933 to Marion Braddock and Coyt Gainey in Bishopville, SC. He attended St. John’s High School in Darlington, SC, then enlisted in the Navy in 1952 and served until 1971. He achieved the rank of E-8 (Senior Chief Petty Officer) and was stationed on severalaircraft carriers and destroyers. He spent several years in recruiting duty in Houston, Texas and Columbia, SC. After his military retirement he obtained an associate degree from Midlands Technical College. He worked at Hewitt-Robbins as the maintenance foreman for twenty years until a second retirement; and lastly, he did some consulting work for this company.

He is survived by his wife, Annie Jackson Gainey and his son, Alden Rodney Gainey, Jr. from his first marriage to Patsy Howle. He was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Helen Gainey.

He was a post commander at the Chapin American Legion and had been active for years in the Jamil Temple Shriners. He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews who dearly loved him especially when playing the many games of softball, volleyball, and dodgeball after the massive holiday meals.

Rodney was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, boating, trailbike riding, and hiking. Many miles were clocked hiking and biking in many of the state forests. Fishing was quite challenging for him, but he persisted for many years.Also, he was an avid reader and especially enjoyed the suspense and legal thrillers genre.

A memorial service will be held at Noon on Monday April 7, 2025 at Chapin Christian Community Church with inurnment to immediately follow in the church cemetery. The family will host a visitation at 11:00 am until the hour of service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials made in Rodney’s honor may be made to Chapin Christian Community Church.
